My husband decided to buy himself a laptop because I kept taking over his computer to surf the net and complete on-line surveys. But now I have taken over the laptop and he can keep his computer. We bought a secondhand IBM Thinkpad T22 on Ebay for about £250.
It is a Pentium III 900mhz with 256mb RAM and a 20gb hard drive, it also came with a swappable DVD-ROM and a floppy disk drive which share the same slot. It has two PCMCIA slots. I have never used the floppy disk, as I use a USB pen drive for backing up files instead, but it is good to know that we have one should we need it, because we do not have one in our main PC.
We bought a PCMCIA network card so that I can connect to the internet wherever I am in the house (or garden).
The keyboard is very comfortable to use, I have it on a stand so that it is at an angle, rather than using it flat. I don't really like the trackball, which is a little red button in the middle of the keyboard that moves the mouse pointer,so I have a USB mini mouse connected to it. As the T22 only has one USB port, we bought a PCMCIA USB card with two ports on, so now I do not have to unplug the mouse to plug in my pen drive.
The 14" screen is very clear and easy to read. I play lots of puzzles and card games on it. I also use it to do on-line surveys and to email my friends and family.
I mostly use it on the dining room table, but I occasionally use it on my lap whilst sitting on the sofa in front of a roaring log fire (lovely). I have even used it whilst lying in bed when I was ill.
It gets a bit warm when you use it on your lap so I put a tray underneath it, I have one of those laptrays with the beanbag on the bottom so it is quite comfortable. I also use it in the kitchen when I am making my shopping list, I have made a list of all the things I usually buy, in Excell, and then I just take the laptop to the kitchen, go through all the cupboards and type in the quantities that I need, then I can print the list out using the wirless network.
When we went on holiday we stayed in a caravan, so I took the laptop so that the kids could watch DVD's or play games if it was raining. It didn't rain.
I don't often use it on battery power, but the battery lasts around about 2 and a half hours. I wouldn't like to carry the T22 about a lot, as it is quite heavy. But it is ideal for what I need it for and I am very happy with it. It is a good old workhorse. |
